Summer 2023 Reading

 

Each student in grades K-12 will be required to read a grade level standard-based book this summer to ensure our scholars maintain their connection with reading.  Each student must purchase a hard copy of the book so that they can do their marginal notations and other related reader strategies can be used.

Grades 6-8 Summer Reading Assignment

Book Choices:

  1. Invisible:  A Graphic Novel by Christina Diaz Gonzalez; Gabriela Epstein

  2. Treasure Tracks by S.A. Rodriguez

  3. Valentina Salazar is Not a Monster by Zoraida Cordova

After reading one of the books listed above, complete one of the following activities.

  1. Use i-Movie or another video platform to create a book trailer advertising your book so someone else will want to read it.

  2. Design a T-shirt that promotes your book and write a jingle to sell it.

  3. Design a poster with words and pictures to advertise your book. Be creative…use details…elaborate…use color! Use an app to make it interactive.

Grades 9-12 Summer Reading Assignment

Book Choices:

  1. The Agathas by Kathleen Glascow; Liz Lawson

  2. Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer

  3. I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys

After reading one of the books listed above, complete one of the following activities.

  1. Create a mandala with many levels to connect different aspects of the book, its historical time, and culture. Write an explanation of your mandala.

  2. Imagine that you have been given the task of conducting a tour of the town in which the book you read is set. Create a virtual tour, write a video describing the homes of your characters and the places where important events in the book took place. Be creative!

  3. Imagine that you are the author of the book you just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer to convince that the book should be made into a movie. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the various roles. You may only use books that have not been made into movies.

  4. Some characters are interesting, and you can relate to, while others possess a specific personality that is intriguing. Select one of those characters that possess a specific personality that is intriguing. Create an online collage and explain how and why it is intriguing. Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
